Official Press Release for the Dili International Marathon
Dated 17 August 2017 for immediate distribution
The Chief Operating Officer for the East Timor Trading Group, Mr Sam Aluwihare and Director of Operations for Noble Timor, Sean Borrell were proud to announce that the nutritional support program for local elite runners was well underway and so far had proved to be a great success with Timorese runners. A group of twenty six runners were provided daily meals at Makanan Restaurant, located at the food court in Timor Plaza, in the critical build up time to the Dili International Marathon.
“Over the years the ETT group has been one of the key supporters of Timorese runners – Timor-Leste sent runners to the Tokyo Marathon, the Singapore Marathon and the New York Marathon in the past and through these events runners were able to qualify and represent their nation at the 2012 Olympics in London.” said Mr. Borrell; “This year is the genesis of a new program – we want to identify and nurture future sporting talent, taking them to new heights in regional and international long distance running. It is with deep appreciation that the Dili International Marathon and Noble Timor thanks the ETT group for their continued support. We look forward to further developing this relationship next year.”
Taking about the nutrition program provided by Makanan Restaurant Mr. Aluwihare said ““As the Timorese runners enter the final phase of training for the Dili Marathon, it’s important that they consume hearty, nutritious food to be on top form. So Makanan is showing support for the national marathoners by sponsoring them with vouchers for their lunch every day until the race: plenty of good, tasty meat and fish dishes, a great selection of vegetables, speciality breads and rice from our buffet. We’ll be cheering for them! Go Timor-Leste!”.
The twenty six Timorese runners were selected by their performances at the national selection race conducted earlier in June. Working closely with the Timorese Athletics Federation the Dili International Marathon will continue to monitor and support local runners. This philosophy is also reflected in this year’s prize fund for the full and half marathon, which sees Timorese athletes vying for cash prizes which are double the international open categories and also range from first to tenth place across both races.
The Dili International Marathon will also feature a 5 km fun run which will see thousands of Timorese youth coming together in a festival atmosphere, entertained by local bands and activities provided by the Uma America and NGO Ba Futuru.
Registration remains open until the 18th of August.
